Nairobi native Rose Mideva has encountered hurdles since relocating to Vancouver, Canada, a move that has tested her resilience in unexpected ways.
The transition from Kenya’s temperate climate to Vancouver’s harsh winters, where temperatures can drop to -8°C, marked the beginning of her challenges in a new country. Finding affordable housing proved to be one of Mideva’s most daunting tasks. Vancouver, known for its steep living costs, presented an eye-opening reality for the newcomer.
“I had no idea how expensive housing was here,” Mideva remarks, highlighting the fierce competition within the rental market.
After months of searching, she secured a small shared apartment in a less desirable neighbourhood. For many immigrants like Mideva, the absence of established credit or local references compounds the difficulties of securing decent housing. The financial burden extended beyond housing, as Mideva faced the reality of the high cost of living in Canada. Unlike Kenya, where basic living expenses are comparatively low, Mideva struggled to manage her budget amid rising prices for groceries, utilities, and transportation.
“The high cost of living was overwhelming,” she admits, explaining how she often resorted to shopping at discount stores to make ends meet.
Additionally, the financial strain of owning and maintaining a vehicle in Vancouver, coupled with limited public transport options, often results in extended commutes from suburban areas. Education costs further complicated Mideva’s new life in Canada. Accustomed to the lower tuition fees in Kenya, she was unprepared for the high expenses associated with Canadian institutions.
“Tuition fees were way higher than anything I had imagined,” she shares.
Even with scholarships, she faced substantial debt, which necessitated a delicate balance between her work obligations and academic pursuits. This financial strain is not uncommon among immigrants seeking higher education in Canada, often resulting in delays in career advancement. In reflecting on her journey, Mideva provides crucial advice for prospective immigrants. She underscores the importance of financial preparation and the need for flexibility, saying “Save as much as you can before you arrive,”
Mideva also emphasizes the value of community support, urging newcomers to connect with established immigrant groups for guidance and assistance. Despite the challenges, Mideva has successfully navigated her initial struggles and has established a fulfilling life in Canada. She recognizes the opportunities and growth that Canada has afforded her.
“Canada has given me many opportunities, and I have grown immensely,” she says.
