Meet Dr Christine Wachira, the First Kenyan Winemaker in the US

Dr Christine Wachira’s journey from a healthcare professional to a pioneering winemaker exemplifies the power of pursuing one’s passions.

As the founder of Wachira Wines, Christine has carved a unique niche in the American wine industry, becoming the first Kenyan American to establish a winery in the United States. Wachira’s story begins in Kenya where she was raised amidst a close-knit family. After relocating to the United States in the late 1990s, she pursued higher education and built a successful 15-year career in healthcare. The inspiration for Wachira Wines stems from a personal quest to find the perfect wine pairing for her mother’s Kenyan cuisine. This seemingly simple desire evolved into a groundbreaking venture that would challenge industry norms and celebrate cultural diversity.

In 2017, Wachira founded her winery, seamlessly merging Californian winemaking techniques with Kenyan cultural elements. The result is a sensory experience dubbed the Wachira Wine Safari which takes wine enthusiasts on a journey through flavour and tradition. Each bottle in the collection features wildlife on its label, with the prestigious Black Label series showcasing Africa’s Big Five: buffalo, rhino, elephant, leopard, and lion. Wachira Wines offers three distinct collections, each reflecting a different facet of the founder’s vision.

The Black Label Collection includes a Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Muscat, and sparkling white wine. The Rose Gold Collection features a captivating rosé, while the Queens Collection showcases natural wines, including a Pinot Noir and a white blend. As a black woman in the wine industry, Wachira has faced numerous challenges including financial constraints, production limitations, and market scepticism. However, her innovative approach has allowed her to overcome these obstacles, forging crucial partnerships that garner support from early advocates of her brand.
