Kenya Secures Labour Migration Deal Among Four Other Agreements with Canada

On June 1, 2024, Kenya and Canada strengthened their partnership by signing several crucial agreements during the Kenya-Canada Binational Commission.

The commission was co-chaired by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sign’Oei and Cheryl Urban, Canada’s Assistant Deputy Minister for Sub-Saharan Africa Global Affairs. The engagement focused on various essential areas of cooperation. One of the most significant agreements reached pertains to labour migration. Both nations acknowledge the potential advantages of allowing workers to move freely between Kenya and Canada. This arrangement aims to tackle unemployment in Kenya while simultaneously boosting diaspora remittances which serve as a vital lifeline for many Kenyan families.

To facilitate smoother migration, the two countries have committed to streamlining visa processes by eliminating consular and administrative barriers thus encouraging more Kenyans to explore opportunities in Canada and enhancing the experience for those already residing there. Furthermore, Kenya and Canada pledge to cooperate more closely in the domains of trade and investment. Although specific details are not disclosed, this agreement is anticipated to bolster Kenya’s economy by promoting exports and attracting foreign direct investment. Canada’s commitment to expanding trade ties showcases its confidence in Kenya’s economic potential.

The two nations have also addressed global challenges, agreeing on a coordinated approach to multilateral issues such as peace and security. The sustainable blue economy is another focal point with Kenya and Canada aiming to promote environmental sustainability and economic growth. During the commission, Kenyan officials met with Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister for International Development, expressing deep appreciation for Canada’s support in critical sectors like education, health, climate, and the blue economy. Discussions centred on enhancing climate resilience, promoting gender equality, and expanding vocational training opportunities for Kenya’s rapidly growing population.

Cheryl Urban commends the accomplishments resulting from the strong relationship between Kenya and Canada. Their joint efforts have yielded significant progress and both nations look forward to building on these foundations. Principal Secretary Korir Sign’Oei expresses gratitude for the spirit of partnership that guided their deliberations. His visit to Canada marks the successful conclusion of the 3rd Session of the Kenya-Canada Binational Commission, held from May 30 to May 31.
