For many, moving to America and starting anew is an enticing prospect.
However, the reality of such an endeavour can be daunting especially when one lacks a support system or connections in the country. Before setting foot on American soil, Dafine took the necessary steps to secure a visa and plane ticket. Lacking a host or acquaintances in her desired destination, she proactively reached out to seven churches in the area and explained her situation. Her persistence paid off when one church responded the following morning, offering her a place to stay.
Soon, Dafine encountered her first challenge in navigating the bustling July 4th celebrations that necessitated her flight cancellation and she had to spend the night at the airport. She pressed on and reached her host’s abode the next day, where she was greeted with a warm welcome, complete with a bed, mattress, bedding, and food for a week – a gesture that deeply touched her heart. Her host, cognizant of the importance of self-sufficiency, advised her not to become a burden on others and to strive for independence. This advice proved invaluable as Dafine embarked on her quest for employment. However, this was made more challenging by her lack of transportation and a driver’s license.
Initially, she secured a job that required frequent travel to various locations, forcing her to rely on costly Uber rides that drained her meagre financial resources. Undaunted, she persevered until she found a position closer to her residence, albeit still necessitating transportation expenses. Dafine’s resilience shone through when she discovered a room for rent a mere seven minutes away from her workplace. With gratitude for her previous host and the church that facilitated this connection, she embarked on this new chapter, determined to thrive in her adopted homeland.
Dafine recounts encountering several obstacles from transportation woes to financial struggles. Yet, her willingness to seek assistance from unexpected sources such as churches and strangers enabled her to overcome these challenges and forge a path toward her goals. For those harbouring dreams of relocating to America, Dafine’s message is clear: do not be discouraged. She encourages aspiring immigrants to reach out to churches and organizations online, as these connections can provide invaluable support and guidance. While she acknowledges the difficulties in such undertakings, she urges others not to abandon their dreams in the face of challenges.
