In Kansas City, Missouri, Nyahururu-born nurse Ann Muraya has embarked on a remarkable journey, redefining elder care through the caregiving business Truman Ridge Adult Day Center.

Armed with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Northwest Missouri State University, Muraya taps on her expertise to provide personalized care that allows seniors to maintain their independence and dignity within the comfort of their homes. Established in 2014, the centre has flourished, offering a safe and nurturing environment where participants can engage in a variety of activities while receiving essential nursing care and advocacy. The centre’s success, however, has not been without its challenges, particularly in ensuring adequate staffing and overcoming financial constraints to expand services further.

Despite these hurdles, Muraya remains steadfast in her vision of promoting quality living and respect for seniors, emphasizing the importance of education and advocacy in managing prevalent health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Now in its 10th year of operation, Truman Ridge Adult Day Center boasts a spacious 10,000-square-foot facility, accommodating up to 90 participants daily. Beyond merely providing care, the centre prioritizes socialization and engagement, offering a diverse range of recreational activities and nutritious meals to enhance the well-being of its attendees.

Muraya’s dedication extends beyond the walls of her centre as she envisions her model of care being replicated globally, reiterating the universal need for safe spaces where individuals, regardless of their challenges, can find understanding, support, and companionship. Within the centre’s welcoming environment, participants access a wide array of engaging activities tailored to their interests and abilities. These activities include card games, board games like Family Feud, and recreational pursuits such as pool and ping pong.
