During the reign of former President Moi, there was a period when civil servants, especially teachers, went months without receiving their salaries.
Thus, they protested nationwide, holding up posters calling for fair wages. The 80s and 90s were a time of salary struggles, with one person- Ibrahim Ambwere, a wealthy businessman from the Western region rising to the occasion. Ambwere shocked everyone by announcing that he would pay the entire 48 million Kenyan Shillings owed to the teachers. In the past, 48 million Shillings was a significant amount of money, particularly when considering its source: a man with a modest upbringing and limited schooling.
Despite his humble background, Ambwere appeared to possess great wealth. The name Ibrahim Ambwere is recognized throughout bustling towns in Kenya. With a fortune valued in the billions, he is seen as an enigmatic individual involved in various lucrative business endeavours which have earned him a place among the exclusive billionaire elite. Ambwere deliberately stays out of the spotlight, expressing a wish to avoid the media’s scrutiny and constant focus. However, his deeds reveal a great deal about his beliefs, especially his dedication to education.
Ambwere’s acts of goodwill go beyond just paying teachers’ wages. He has also played a part in building schools and libraries in Western Kenya, as well as supporting disadvantaged students. Nicholas Abwunza and Timothy Mudasia, the twin sons of Ambwere, have chosen to live a more modest life, following in their father’s footsteps despite their privileged upbringing. Despite their affluent background, the twins believe that simply being wealthy is not enough to lead a satisfying and contented life.
Raised in Chavakali, Vihiga County, where their father has multiple business ventures, the Mudasia brothers received their education in Kenyan schools before embarking on separate journeys after graduating from Vihiga High School. Tim Mudasia completed his undergraduate studies in Accounting and Business Management at Moi University before going abroad to further his education in Australia. In contrast, Nicholas attended A levels in Uganda before joining Makerere University. Although their father played a crucial role in their upbringing, their mother, a committed medical professional, took on the primary responsibility of raising the twins. She actively engaged in school committees and served at Kakamega Hospital and Mbale Hospital before retiring.
Nick and Tim have devoted themselves to their education, causing them to pursue different paths than their father. Tim, the older of the twins, now works as a consultant at ESSSuper in Australia. In this role, he offers important financial guidance to government and NGO organizations that manage significant pension funds and insurance portfolios with a focus on emergency and state departments. As a father of two, Timothy Mudasia has also held positions at well-known Australian companies like the National Australia Bank, as well as respected wealth advisory firms such as AMP and MLC.
On the contrary, Nicholas Mudasia holds the position of Chief Human Resource, Public Affairs, and Communication Officer for Coca-Cola in Africa. He has previously held leadership roles in various companies across Africa, the United Kingdom, and Israel, including well-known brands like Carlsberg, Kansai Plascon, GT Bank, MTN Group, and Kenya Airways. The twins have managed to pave their own way through life and gain financial stability without being dependent on their father’s riches, all thanks to the education he provided for them.
