Bristol City emerged victorious in a close match against Sheffield Wednesday, the Championship’s last-place team.
Harambee Stars hopeful Zach Onyego Vyner displayed an impressive performance during the game. The Owls faced a setback when their captain, Barry Bannan, was sent off for a foul on Jason Knight near the goal. Rob Dickie scored the first goal for Bristol City, capitalizing on a cross from Tommy Conway. The home team came close to securing a second goal, hitting the woodwork twice through Conway and Sam Bell. In the dying moments of the game, Ashley Fletcher deflected Will Vaulks’ free-kick, but Max O’Leary made an outstanding save to deny Sheffield Wednesday an equalizer.
Following a 2-0 loss to Cardiff, Bristol City recently parted ways with their manager Nigel Pearson and appointed Curtis Fleming as caretaker. Bristol City believe they should have been awarded a penalty when Bannan, a former Scotland international, fouled Knight on the edge of the area. However, the referee deemed it a free-kick and showed Bannan his first red card since March 2016. In the previous match, Rotherham came close to scoring early in the second half, but O’Leary made a great save to deny Iorfa’s header.
Dickie, the centre-back, found the back of the net for City, marking their first goal since their victory over Coventry City on 21 October. He slid in and scored from a short distance. Despite their dangerous situation, the Owls continued to fight, and O’Leary made an incredible reaction save to prevent them from equalizing. Towards the end of the game, Conway had an opportunity to make it 2-0 when he broke forward after Dawson had gone up for a corner. However, he hesitated, allowing Famewo to recover and make a challenge.
Next Saturday, Danny Rohl’s team, nine points away from safety, will host Millwall, who are currently struggling. Bristol City, on the other hand, will be back in action on the same day, travelling to QPR. Vyner played for 61 minutes in the match. He made three tackles and won four out of five ground duels. He displayed confidence in possession, completing two accurate long passes and 55 successful passes overall. Vyner’s father is English while his mother is Kenyan.
