Laws Set for Review to End Double Taxation, DP Gachagua Assures Kenyans in the Diapora
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that the government will be reviewing legislation to prevent Kenyans in the diaspora from being subjected to double taxation when sending money back home.

Speaking at a meeting with Kenyans in Germany, Gachagua recognized the valuable role that Kenyans abroad play in boosting the economy. However, the DP expressed concern over the financial burden they face due to being taxed both in their country of residence and in Kenya. Yet, the Deputy President voiced reassurance, sharing that the Kenya Revenue Authority and National Treasury are conducting a thorough review that considers alternative solutions. By overcoming the issue of double taxation, Kenyans in the diaspora will be encouraged to actively participate in the country’s development.

According to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the government is tackling the matter in collaboration with the National Treasury, KRA, and the State Department of Diaspora. Since Tuesday, the Deputy President has been overseas, commencing his journey in Belgium where he represented President William Ruto at the Global Gateway Forum coordinated by the European Commission. Kenya and its European partners made use of this forum to increase relationships in crucial areas such as renewable energy, digital innovation, education, healthcare, and transportation. The Deputy President had an interaction with Kenyans in Belgium at the Tangla Hotel in Brussels before heading to Germany on Thursday.

Mr Gachagua conveyed appreciation for the enduring alliance between Kenya and Germany, which began after the country’s independence in 1963. During his Friday night speech in Munich, Germany, the DP lauded the German Government for its display of kindness to Kenyans. The Deputy President pointed out that diaspora remittance is the largest foreign exchange earner for the nation. He further stated that with the establishment of the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, the government aims to assign a responsible officer to oversee the community.

Rigathi expressed his enthusiasm for the occasion, conveying the matters that the government intends to address to enhance efficiency and promptly resolve any concerns.
