'Cheza Chini, Utamwaga Unga': Kenyans Online Warn Larry Madowo After Calling Out His Employer on Twitter

Kenyans online have advised journalist Larry Madowo against continued criticism on his employer, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

This is after Madowo, who never shies away from speaking his mind, called out the international media house in a series of tweets over double standards.

He noted that it is hypocritical for the BBC to bar him from using some common racist words in his news reports, to refer to someone who had publicly and unapologetically used the same words.

“The BBC didn’t allow me, an actual black man, to use the N-word in an article when quoting an African-American who used it… a white person was allowed to say it ON TV because it was ‘editorially justified’..[why?],” tweeted Madowo.

Madowo is presently working as a US correspondent for BBC reporting on various matters including the upcoming American presidential election and the Covid-19 situation.

Most Kenyans online admitted Madowo is right to question his employer’s decisions but warned he should tread carefully to avoid being fired.

Jack Okuku wrote: “Cheza chini bro utachujwa huku kenya hamna kazi vumilia tu.”

Gprop Grinning said: “My brother fanya kazi hizo luxury za kutumia N word kwa hewa wachana nazo, unaweza rudia N word mara mia ukisharudi kwako jioni.”

@Just_Tomln wrote: “Naona ukiwa fired ukiifanya iwe issue. Utamwaga unga…..But N-word shouldn’t be used by anyone. This is a “slave word” and we passed that.”

@gabu_sang said: “Cheza chini usistukie tuko na wewe na the trend Amina aliomoka nayo. Mdogo mdogo ujipate unatuonyesha videos za nyau.”

Steve Mbogo warned: “Msee utafutwa job na hii uzunguzungu mingi. Huyo ni employer unaongelesha ivo. Kijana tunza kazi.”

@charlawh_frank noted: “Kaka Larry, huku twafutwa kazi hali ni tete, cheza chini kwa ajili ya kubarua tu.”

Larry Madowo, he who pays the Piper determines the tune. You accept the job, with the pay, and the tune. Or reject it. But you are not allowed to accept the job, with the pay, and decide to play your own tune. You either do what you are being paid to do, or resign, and start your own business, if you feel that you are being suffocated where you are. But you cannot have it both ways. You have to choose.

  6. Of Slaverish and Spoon…
Of Slaverish and Spoon mentality are those Accusing or Castigating Mr. Madowo for Calling a Spade a Spade. Double standards are Bad and should be Told off with or without being fired. Keep up the Good job Mr. Madowo!

Double standards? That’s the lay mans word for racism. Ask any AA. The only population that uses that word comfortably are street gangs. Hope you understand BBC can do without you.

If you don’t like it just resign and tell them they are restricting your freedom and you can’t work like that. That is what people do. Stop bitching or stop being a bitch whichever one is correct.

Larry is highly privileged to work with white boys! He is on top of his own world. He feels he wants to make his own working rules and tell every body how it shall be done! So let Larry continue to dig his lown grave with unnecessary cheap complaints!

@Larry is trying hard to make a name for himself in the muzungu world! You will get your little bud nibbles without notice. Ask advise from Jeff Koinange!!

Ukicheza na codi ya mwenye Kazi @larry, wao watakufukuza!

You have not graduated yet to start the luo arrogance in your bones at BBC! As matter of fact then whites don’t care about you! You are still a nugu to them even as they laugh with you. Don’t be foolish!

Two years in America is far from understanding the ways of the white folks to call them out! As a matter of facts, the black Americans are very mad at you for using the “N” word! Did your mother teach you some good manners! You are lacking a lot of social discipline; fren!!

Using the word nigger is equivalent to a kikuyu woman calling you the uncircumcised lad!!! And how do you like that expression!? Crude indeed; yes, right?? Watch your mouth Larry!!!

Know your boundaries and trend carefully! Your flab number 1 has be unkindly noted! You might not be too lucky on flab #2! Be advised!!

Very notable advise! Them fools will make @ Larry and bring your tail down in equal measures or more! @larry, take note of @mwinzadi observation! It may take you far than you may want to admit!

  11. @Larry – be put on notice…
@Larry – be put on notice that wazungu are full of revenge and really forget when embarrassed by your type. They note everything in the secret part of their heart and keep on counting!

Don’t be surprised if your silly point of view get revenged in the very near future. Remember every muzungu will always back the sentiments of a fellow muzungu! They record everything and create a secure file data for it!

Don’t be naive to think they like you all that much! BBC has a job quarter to fill and perhaps settled on you for simply being a black dude from a foreign land!

That foreign land is Kenya where they travel far and wide to see the wild beasts. And after enjoying the migratory movement of the wild beasts, they kill a few and use their heads as souvenirs to hang on the wall.

You are just another wild beast’s head hanging on a muzungu house wall!! Be measured in your talk, you are still not equal in the muzungu eyes, be wise or pry for some wisdom; and constantly watch your back!! You ain’t any more special that many of those who have traveled that’s rocky road before you!!!

  12. Larry I am glad you know…
Larry I am glad you know your worth and can speak up when you see some nonsense going on. Good for you!
You are the kind that can fight for freedom and justice and not the above cowardly, worthless key board worriors who constantly have their tail between their legs when they see injustice happening. Their wives would be raped while they hide under the bed. Bure bure Kabisa! We are lucky they are not our forefathers because black man everywhere would still be enslaved or colonized. KUDOS Larry, great job!

Good negative advise from a fool to another fool to keep digging his infamous childish narrative against Larry’s fellow employees to feel his presence in BBC. Take them on head on Larry; keep digging!!

Ati “Acheze chini ya maji” lol. Common Kenyan mentality. He has a point!

  14. Why does he want to use the…
Why does he want to use the word so bad that he would push back on BBC’s censorship? Using the N-word doesn’t add anything to the conversation. it is a distraction from what is important. I know he thinks that he has the right, and he does, but I would like him to explain why using a derogatory work on air is so important to him. it is an offensive word that many people would not like to hear, especially African Americans and people of African descend do not use. I don’t appreciate being called the “N” word. Check the usage of the word and stop giving it any more power. Thank you,
