Ugandan MP Bobi Wine has joined hands with US businessman Neil Nelson to evacuate people of Africa descent who are stuck in China after a wave of racial attacks broke out there.
In a statement, the two said they will airlift affected Africans and African-Americans to a country in Africa that is willing to receive them.
“The two leaders are currently working together to facilitate a humanitarian mission to airlift those Africans and African-Americans who are affected by these attacks to a country in Africa that is willing to receive them,” the statement read.
“We are also prepared to evacuate them to the United States for those holding US citizenship or permanent resident status.”
The two further called on African leaders to take urgent action to ensure Africans abroad are protected.
“We call upon leaders from across the global African community including political leaders, social activists, artists and other leaders to join in this effort.”
Their announcement comes days after reports of Africans being kicked out of their apartment and denied access to services at local businesses over allegations of spreading Covid-19.
Most of those affected are citizens of Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and Kenya. Photos and videos of Africans sleeping on the streets in Guangzhou, China emerged on social media, sparking public outrage.
In a tweet, Bobi Wine said: “Together with my friend Neil Nelson, CEO Atlanta BlackStar, we are offering to airlift Africans and African-Americans being subjected to inhumane treatment in parts of China. Only if we get an African nation and/or the US willing to receive them.”
Nelson is the co-founder of media company, Atlanta BlackStar while Wine, 35, is the MP for Kyadondo East Constituency in Uganda. Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has declared he will run for president in Uganda in 2021.
