Kenyan Journalist Larry Madowo Rushed to Hospital in the US

Renowned Kenyan media personality Larry Madowo was on Thursday rushed to the hospital over an undisclosed illness.

Madowo, who is presently studying for his master’s degree in the US, posted a photo showing him covered in a face mask and being lifted onto an ambulance by a team of medics. Although he did not disclose what is ailing him, he specified that it was not coronavirus.

“It’s all fun and games until you end up in ER [emergency room] considering your own mortality. No, it wasn’t for coronavirus. And yes, I’ll live,” Madowo captioned the photo.

Last year, Madowo took a break from his role as the business editor at BBC Africa to join Columbia University. He is one of the 10 beneficiaries of the 44th Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Business and Economics at the Columbia Journalism School.

The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship is the only global mid-career journalism program devoted to business, economics, finance, and tech journalism.

  1. Call 911 and that’s how they…
Call 911 and that’s how they treat those with accents like a walking disease.
    Masks and all..
I’d like to hear Larry’s honest take on it

  2. The US is not a Lay back…
The US is not a Lay back country like Kenya; it can be so Stressful and Sickening. So if You have something Better to do in Kenya: Keep on doing it there for Your Physical and Mental Health sake.

  3. It takes a big-mouthed…
It takes a big-mouthed Kenyan like Madowo to learn how America works. Just because he was a mouthed journalist on NTV makes him feel like he can run his mouth in the same way he did back. Somebody should tell him that if you have an ascent, a deep one like MjuAji, you just have to talk less wherever you go. Reason? You ain’t speaking the damn English. His wife, Ms Rubadiri, should have prepared him well in advance. If you see Kenyans lying low like envelopes, or walking like zombies, its the mountain of trash bills that they are trying to flattened, before the sheriff comes knocking. Just saying.

    • @mjuaji haaaaaa you so funny…
@mjuaji haaaaaa you so funny with your comment lying low like envelope good advice

    • I’m wondering what your…
I’m wondering what your comment has to do with Larry’s illness. You have probably lived in fear, insecurity of your accent and vocabulary abilities, and low self esteem that you project your Subconscious limiting beliefs and insecurities on Larry and expect the others to join in your pity party. Come on! You can’t be negative every time someone asserts their place on the table. Mandela said it best, “We will all be at the table, either as dinner or the dinners. Larry want’s to make himself part of the convoy but dinner mentality wants him to lay low like a Turkey on a plate or was it like an envelope? #preymentality

  4. Interesting how you had time…
Interesting how you had time to ask someone to take your sorry self a picture. You should have gone to the hospital sooner instead of calling for ambulance but I guess you wanted a pic to show your followers. Now that you have witnessed a working system you can be an agent of change in Kenya. Advocate for nurses and doctors and help improve their working conditions. Buildings do not heal people, people do.

  5. I hope he has good insurance…
I hope he has good insurance. That ambulance ride could be $3000 or more and if he was an inpatient for a night, another $3000 maybe necessary. You can go broke in a hurry.

    • @Mumdumugo, he will learn…
@Mumdumugo, he will learn the hard way that if you are not seriously sick you do not call an ambulance or go emergency. You drive yourself to Urgent Care, Patient First etc. Even if you have insurance you will be left with a big bill.

  6. They’ll tell you you have TB…
They’ll tell you you have TB…and will prescribe 6-mos of meds…..or more since you come from the guinea-pig family. Say no to the meds….tell them it’s the live jabs we get in our beloved black continent.
In the meantime, weka showbiz na mdomo mwingi kando….hatred in some american states has become almost tangible….

  7. Hehe Larry Madowo has time…
Hehe Larry Madowo has time to capture a picture of himself in an ambulance, wonders will never cease in my world!!!!

  8. After this you will sure…
After this you will sure close your mouth na kuimba “mungu nifundishe kunyamaza”huko sio Kenya.

  9. @ Midiwo – Americans call it…
@ Midiwo – Americans call it like it is – is it coronavirus, mono, common cold, flu-like symptoms -A or B, stress attack.

So what is it that you are suffering from if it is not coronavirus? You could have easily said you had a severe headache after a long day in the classroom . Case closed!

You can open up your mind a little bit since you are no longer in Kenya where every sickness is treated as a top secret affair! It is called being honest.

The ambulance team wore the facial musks to protect themselves from any communicable diseases you may have, and also they want to protect you as well – it does not matter if you black or white. So don’t read some sinister motives about the face-must; it is a normal hygiene procedure by medics in the US.

  10. Muna chuki mingi sana,…
Muna chuki mingi sana, ambieni Mungu awachunguze nyoyo zenu na asafishe kabisa. Most here commenting a laced with tribalism. And that makes you sicker than corona virus. Someone’s sick, we rush here to drop bitterness and frustrations zenu za majuu. Kwendeni mbali sana. Chuki yenu kwa Larry Madowo haipunguzi chochote kwake. This guy has gone through a lot in life and he uses people like you, wicked as you are as a pedestal. Who knows the person who took that pic probably wanted to use it to taint him and he found a way to foil it and get ahead of the story. Can you imagine how some of you would treat him when you met him face to face and hide behind your pseudo accounts here typing vile things about someone who simply shared about being ill. Roho chafu! Two faced people. “Who born you?” Take several seats! Nkt! Haters mtameza wembe! Get well soon Larry. You will Succeed in Kenya, UK and US. Favor, good health and prosperity will follow you. We celebrate you as a Kenyan hata ugenini.

    • @chris – no one said Larry…
@chris – no one said Larry has not gone through a lot in life! And, mind you many Kenyans get taken to hospitals in ambulances all over the world but it never becomes news worthy.

Many of the sick would even want to forget about the sound of rescue Ambulance because of the cost factor involved, let alone having the time to take a selfie.

So I don’t think anyone is jealous of Larry calling 911 to get help. Quick recovery to Larry!

You are just pitching some baby tads for no apparent reason(s)! It isn’t necessary for you to start your mensural cycle for no particular cause!

      • Maina you are tribalistic…
Maina you are tribalistic and sexist to the core. Chunga sana mzee, people like you cannot survive in a progressive world with your repressive, derogatory, static and pervasive mentality. If you and the men in your lineage get a monthly period as a man, keep it to yourself bwana, stop embarrassing yourself. The fact that this made it to Mwakilishi is Mwakilishi’s prerogative to explain to you. Frankly, you are just mad you are not Larry, as you shamelessly type your frustrations and direct it toward an invalid. Shame on you.

        • @chris – you sounded like…
@chris – you sounded like you are the newly married to Larry based on the way you emotionally seemed to defend “what Larry have go through in life.”

Had you been a “man” you would understand the golden rule that humanity go through events of life daily! It is very normal for humanity to go through @things!” So stop crying foul like a little puto cornered by a busy sinorita!

I have no desire whatsoever to be either you or Larry! As a matter of fact, I am sure what Larry does can never be of benefit to me. What do you think Larry May have that I want to be jealous for?

You sound quite pathetic at best!

          • Like I said Maina, you are…
Like I said Maina, you are tribalistic and sexist to the core. I pity you. You come from a very archaic school of thought that men cannot or should not be empathetic. You are disgusting to say the least. “Newly married to Larry?” You are deranged and a homophobic. If you have a problem with men getting married then you are in the wrong place baba! You should’ve stayed in your village, never exposing yourself and allowing others to witness your level of shadiness and stupidity. In that case then, why did you respond to my post when I said some here are bitter and jealous and tribalistic instead of saying a kind word to an invalid? You know yourself and in your heart of hearts, tribalism pumps through your blood. Ghasia wewe! Like I said, Mwakilishi highlighted this story, you should follow up with him about why he thought it was newsworthy, other than that pray for yourself and your hate and tribalistic nature towards your countryman. I’ve seen many get cured of it.

    • @Chris, many Kenyans work in…
@Chris, many Kenyans work in healthcare that why they do not see this as a big deal because they see ambulances all the time. Hakuna chuki hapa. The dude still have Kenya mentality that’s why he got time to take pictures.

      • So can you ascertain for a…
So can you ascertain for a fact that he took his own picture? Maybe you have the Kenyan Chuki thousands of miles from Kenya. The guy is here to study. Cut him some slack. Mwakilishi got his story here and NOT Larry!

        • @Chris, he must have asked…
@Chris, he must have asked somebody to take his picture. The paramedics do not take pictures when they come to pick a patient. Most of us work in healthcare and getting into ambulance is not a big deal. Why are you so bitter when people comment.

          • I’m not bitter, I’m simply…
I’m not bitter, I’m simply calling out tribalistic Kenyans who are stupid enough to air it out in a country where they are considered minorities. You aren’t sure that he asked someone to take his photo are you. And why should you even bother yourself with the nitty gritty. Someone’s sick empathize and move on. Bitter? Nope. I crash tribalists like the soil under my foot.

        • @Chris, in case of an…
@Chris, in case of an emergency, saving life comes first not taking pictures. A person who is fighting for his life will not have time to take pictures. There are over a million international students in USA. I do know why you are reminding us that he is here to study. He is not the only one.

        • @chris – no body really…
@chris – no body really cares about those you consider to be of high profile to you. Don’t think that because Larry worked as a journalist in Kenya, that will make Kenyans in America jump out of their seats or start pissing in their pants. You really sound very confused about yourself and that is why you trying to find some pride in someone’s career! Why are you defending Larry while he has a mouth to defend himself? And does anyone care who took the photo – Larry, Chris or otherwise? Remember this – many women in labor cannot even call an Ambulance to take them to deliver in a Clinic in Kenya because they cannot afford it!

          • Maina, Mwakilishi…
Maina, Mwakilishi highlighted his story. The fact that you took some time to write and respond to just about everyone who commented is a key indication that this story meant something to you. On the contrary I saw some tribalistic goons peeking their heads up and i thought that they needed a reminder. By responding to my post, which I clearly didn’t call anyone by name- you and Kenya self- identified yourselves as the key tribalists. You have no business living/working or thriving anywhere apart from your village with that kind of mentality. Grow up mzee! Shun tribalism for once in your lifetime and unlock blessings upon your life and your people. Ukweli usemwe.

    • Pointing out self absorbed…
Pointing out self absorbed behavior is not tribalism. If it’s not an emergency, you don’t call 911 and if it is an emergency you don’t have time for selfies. Health care in America is ridiculous expensive and it makes no sense to spend money if uber, a cab or a friend is available.

      • &mundumugo – wow, very nice!…
&mundumugo – wow, very nice! You just had to break down to be easily understood between the ears!

But, why are you talking common sense to these new Johnny-come-lately “VIPs” geniuses who have found a new American way of life!? Know it all!!

Grandma used to say, don’t argue with a fool otherwise you won’t know who is foolish among you!” If this amounts to me being called a tribalism, well so be it!

Surely, I still deeply love my granny for her honesty!

  11. So he had a camera man in…
So he had a camera man in waiting when he fell sick to document it all ?

      • Oh well, the guy has been…
Oh well, the guy has been through a lot in this life; so says his buddy Chris!

No one said life was gonna be easy; not at all, and especially for new comers to America who expect everything to be handed over to them in a Silver- platter!

It is the generation of “what have you done for me lately” with a feigned selective mentality of “I can’t do this or that in a foreign country” to survive like many others are having to do!
