US-Based Lawyer Makau Mutua Reacts as Trump Gov’t Blacklists Senator Amos Wako

US-based lawyer Prof. Makau Mutua has welcomed Monday’s decision by President Trump administration to ban former Attorney-General and Busia Senator Amos Wako from traveling to the US.

Wako, his wife Flora Ngaira and son Julius were blacklisted over what the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described as “involvement in significant corruption.”

In a statement, Pompeo said Wako’s sanction was a demonstration of the US’ commitment to supporting Kenya’s war on graft, which is crippling the economy.

“Today’s action sends a strong signal that the United States is a valuable partner in Kenya’s fight against corruption,” said Pompeo.

“Economic prosperity for all Kenyans is only possible by defeating the scourge of corruption, which also requires a functional, fair, and transparent criminal justice system. The United States will continue to stand with all Kenyans as they strive to curb and punish corruption in Kenya.”

Taking to Twitter after the announcement, Prof. Makau reckoned that Senator Wako’s ban from the US was the first of many to come.

“Former AG Amos Wako banned by the United States over Corruption. I’d be shocked if more heads don’t roll,” Makau wrote.

The government of Kenya is yet to issue a statement regarding the development.

Can someone ask Makau to account for all the money he has collected from the US government in his civil rights organization?
