Gov’t Declares Its Position on Miguna Miguna Second Return

The government has maintained that lawyer Miguna Miguna must comply with laid out clearance procedures for him to granted entry into the country.

The self-proclaimed National Resistance Movement (NRM) general is expected to return to the country on Wednesday.

On Sunday, government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe said the firebrand lawyer has no option, but to comply with travel requirements. 

“We would not want the government to shift its attention to one man’s travelling,” Kiraithe said, stating that the law is clear and the lawyer knows what is required of him.

“Miguna Miguna is an old traveler. He knows what to do to gain entry into the country procedurally,” Kiraithe is quoted by the Star.

In a letter to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights(KNCHR), Immigration PS Gordon Kihalangwa insisted that Miguna must apply to regain his Kenyan citizenship.

The official said the Immigration department will not issue him with a Kenyan Passport or purchase a flight ticket for the lawyer as demanded KNCHR. KNCHR had written to the department last week asking it to purchase an air ticket and issue the deported lawyer with a travel document as ordered by the court.

“The department cannot issue Mr Miguna with a valid Kenyan passport as he has not made any application for the same. Moreover, and without prejudice, we reiterate that Mr Miguna has to regain his Kenyan citizenship before being issued with a Kenyan passport,” Kihalang’wa says in the letter dated May 10th.
