Immigration Principal Secretary Gordon Kihalangwa has refuted claims that exiled lawyer Miguna Miguna was detained in a toilet at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.
Speaking when he appeared before Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Administration on Tuesday, the former Immigration Department boss said the self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general was being held in a “comfortable”, self-contained room at the Nairobi airport, contrary to what photos on the social media showed.
“I want to assure the honorable members that it is very unfortunate that the only photograph that was shown where Dr Miguna was staying was the toilet. But that is a self-contained room, with a bed and mattress and beddings,” said Mr Kihalangwa.
He added: “The only part that they thought was sensitive to be shown was the toilet and in any case you all saw that that was a very clean washroom.”
Last week, Miguna alleged that officials at the airport were holding him in a dirty toilet without food or water.
“I am detained inside a tiny and filthy toilet without access to basic hygiene and necessities of life. The respondents haven’t provided me with food, water, and medical attention in addition to not according me my right to counsel,” said Miguna.
The House team had summoned Kihalangwa alongside Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to explain Miguna’s second deportation.
Miguna Miguna is a liar. …
Miguna Miguna is a liar. And I detest liars. If you have nothing else to tell people, then just shut your mouth and stay mum. But this habit of half truths is not appreciated by many.
