A group of Kenyans in the diaspora have raised more cash to support victims of police brutality injured during last year’s general elections.
The group, consisting of National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters living and working in the United Kingdom, raised Sh1.2million. The money will be used to foot hospital bills and other needs for the victims.
Several opposition supporters died while scores were injured during engagement with security officers in different parts of the country following last year’s disputed presidential elections.
“I wish to convey our sincere gratitude to your entire team for this kind gesture that goes a long way in helping to sustain the coalition’s agenda on electoral justice,” said Magaya when he received the donations at his office in Capitol Hill, Nairobi on Monday.
UK NASA Chairman Kivindyo Ndivo said his team’s will continue to pile pressure on the British government to condemned extra judicial killings and brutality by police in Kenya.
“This battle has only begun and as we move forward to creating a Diaspora Peoples Assembly we will make sure that through the power of the people electoral fraud will be a thing of the past in Kenya’s electoral system,” said Ndivo.
Dana Ayub, one of the organizers of the fundraiser said the group will also push for police reforms.
“We cannot have uniformed police officers used by interested parties to maim our supporters, which goes against international charter on policing” said Ms Ayub.
The group had in late last year raised more than Sh1 million for some of the victims who had been detained in hospitals after failing to clear medical bills.
