The government has lifted a ban imposed on fish imported from China.
A ban on fish imports from the Asian country took effect in November last year after President Kenyatta’s directive.
This came after local traders complained to the President that cheap Chinese fish that had flooded the Kenyan market was killing their businesses.
President Kenyatta directed State officials to restrict the import of fish into the country, saying that local fishermen are able to meet the demand.
The Department of Fisheries explains that the decision to lift the ban is informed by a shortage of fish in the market.
“We were forced to lift the ban to ease the shortage after a huge consignment of fish got stuck at the port, impacting negatively on local supplies,” an official at the Fisheries Department told the Daily Nation.
About 1.8 million kilograms of fish is imported into the country every month. Kenya produces at least 135,000 tonnes of fish annually against a demand of 500,000 tonnes.
Last year, fish imports from China hit Sh1.7 billion as appetite for cheap Chinese fish continue to grow.
Unreliable supply from the local market has forced most fish factories to consider importation.
Proof once again that the…
Proof once again that the boy in statehouse has no spine. Kenya has indian ocean on one side and lake victoria on the other. In between there are multiple lakes and rivers. What justification is there to import chinese fish other than he was read the riot act by the Chinese ambassador.
Pombe tu! We want to see some the leadership. When will you step up?
It pisses me off to see our…
It pisses me off to see our leaders make such unwise and unpatriotic decision. Why rob your own people employment opportunities in favor of Chinese fishermen who are thousands of miles away and lives in World’s second biggest economy?. Kenya does not need tainted Chinese fish since Kenya have enough lakes, rivers and even an Ocean to harvest all the fish it needs. Damn it, China does not need economic liberation from Kenya. It has a full fledged economy. And the same leaders are talking about Kenya having the biggest economy in Africa come 2032? I smell a lot of pot!!!
Pressure and threat of trade…
Pressure and threat of trade tariffs from your new master China forced you to eat your own words. Stop the nonsense about fish shortage. Local fish farmers could be encouraged to increase productivity if such was the case. How can you unashamedly lead a nation that can do nothing for self-reliance; we import: fish, rice, sugar,maize,old-used clothes; our Italian shoes, French suites, furniture- vehicles and electronics. Are we a country or a dumping ground for the rest of the world? If you can’t feed yourself, cloth yourself, think for yourself, who are you? What are you?
The Kenya government has…
The Kenya government has become collaborators with the colonizers (West and Chinese) and will give any excuse to continue in the destruction of the locals and their livelihoods while accommodating foreignors who give them more loans to quench their appetite of changing the constitution to remain in power. If the government needed to halt the importation of fish a few months ago, what changed? Did the Chinese give Kenya an ultimatum? Allow our contaminated fish in or else.
A few months ago Kenya wanted to stop importing dead people’s clothes to save our industries. After a while, the government changed its mind. Was there another ultimatum? Take our dead people’s clothes,(used clothes) their skin diseases and all or else? We have a government that cannot stand for it’s citizens because of greed. The greed in our leaders has made our country the dumping ground of useless and unwanted goods in foreign countries. Kenyan’s you must start protecting yourselves, there is no one out there to protect you. Our leaders are way too greedy and their appetite for foreign money and goods leaves every citizen vulnerable. Every foreign weakness will be allowed in to get hold of foreign cash.
It’s time to leave behind leaders who have now become collaborators!!!
