RwandaAir is planning to launch nonstop flights to the United States.
If cleared, RwandaAir will compete for passengers with Kenya Airways (KQ), which launched direct flights between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi and New York’s JFK Airport three months ago.
RwandAir is currently seeking approval from the relevant US authorities for Category One Status.
The competition for a share of the lucrative American market has also seen another KQ regional rival, Ethiopian Airlines launch flights to JFK International Airport in New York from June 2019.
Ethiopian announced it will introduce three flights a week to JFK Airport in New York, adding to its existing flights to the Newark International Airport in New Jersey.
The entry of Ethiopian Airlines to New York and possible entry of RwandAir to the US is expected to give KQ a run for its money even as all three airlines serve the same East African region.
The move is also likely to dent KQ’s bid to return to profit ways because the US direct flights are one of its recovery strategies after making losses running into billions of shillings in the past few years.
Both Ethiopian Airlines and…
Both Ethiopian Airlines and RwandAir are commercial enterpriseswhile Kenya airways is a loss making vanity project so there is no competition here.

As far as I care as a consumer, business rivalry is a recipe for high quality services. Otherwise, KQ mkicheza vile you guys play with corruption, dishing out your money for profit to politicians and your greedy leaders, you lose..On the flip side, you get a wake up call and improve your services for the better, and I gain as a consumer….that.

Ii like it.These will increase the quality of services since travelers will have choices.I used KQ ,food not so great seats uncomfortable, given that is a long flight. Attendants are great but takes too long. There is like 2hrs- 3hrs difference between each meal.Given a choice I will take a different direct flight rather than KQ.Maybe they will up there services if they have a competitor.
