Safaricom has signed a payments deal with United States financial services company Western Union.
The deal will allow MPesa users to send and receive cash at any Western Union outlets across the globe.
Under the agreement, MPesa customers will be able to transact up to Sh140,000 per day through their mobile phones. The new mobile cash transfer service will allow transactions in 130 global currencies.
Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer Sitoyo Lopokoiyit says the deal will enable Kenyans send and receive money across the world from the comfort of their phones.
“M-PESA Global seeks to connect Kenyans to opportunities by making it easy and seamless for them to transact with the world and for the world to transact with Kenyans,” says Lopokoiyit.
M-pesa customers can access the new service by dialing *840# or by selecting “M-PESA Global” under the M-pesa menu on mySafaricomApp.
Safaricom has similar cash transfer deals with World Remit and HomeSend.
