Millions of Kenyans Consuming Poisonous Sugar

The government says millions of Kenyans are consuming poisonous sugar which is being sold in outlets across the country disguised as local brands.

This comes after Deputy Head of Public Service Wanyama Musiambo, Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Boss George Kinoti nabbed tonnes of poisonous sugar at a godown in Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate last week.

Kinoti said the sugar was being repackaged as local brands such as Kabras, West Sugar and a range of other little-known brands and was found to contain substances harmful to human health.

The officials said samples taken to the Government Chemist for testing showed it had traces of harmful substances capable of causing damage to internal organs if consumed.

“These people are selling poison. I have seen the results and  I am certain about this. The fear now is that it has been spread far and wide,” Kinoti stated.

“We have arrested three suspects who are helping with investigations. We will be going for everyone involved, including government officials who may have facilitated these commodities to end up in the market,” he added.

Head of Agriculture at West Kenya Sugar Company, Ramar Sangaiah said the firm received information about the fake sugar being sold in the company’s name.

The sugar is said to have been smuggled into the country by cartels who comprise powerful individuals in business and political sectors. Also seized during the operation was a complete packaging set-up with weighing, sewing, sealing and printing machines used to label the smaller packages before they are distributed to the market.

The officers also found fake Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) stickers sourced from the agency through underhand methods.
