Kenyans traveling between Nairobi and Mombasa using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger train will pay Sh300 more beginning next month in revised charges.
Passengers on the economy class will be charged Sh1,000 for a one-way ticket on the train service between the route, bringing the end of the promotional service that was launched in June 2017.
The new prices takes effect on April 1st, 2018.
Initially, Kenya Railways had sought to increase the fare from Sh700 to Sh1,200, but the Transport and Infrastructure Ministry intervened through an administrative decision to ensure Kenyans continue enjoying the service at a cheaper cost.
Since its launch in mid last year, the Madaraka Express train has ferried thousands of passengers between the two cities.
Ticket price for passengers in the first class has been retained at Sh3,000. Kenya Railways will also hike fares on the inter-county train.
The revised charges will not affect cargo service until December, as the Railways body continue to lure cargo owners to use the service.
