The Mombasa-Nairobi new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is set to begin operations after the official launching by President Uhuru Kenyatta on May 31st in an event that will be attended by senior officials from the Chinese Government.

State House Spokesperson Manoah Esipisu confirmed that China will send a delegation comprising members of its State Council to the much-awaited launch.

“China who provided the funds through loans that the SGR was built will be sending a senior delegation of the State Council at that launch,” Esipisu said Sunday during his weekly press briefing at the State House.

“We do expect that the President will officiate at events of the container terminal on May 30 before embarking on a train ride the following day,” he added.

The spokesman confirmed that the head of state will board a train from Mombasa to Nairobi and will be making a number of stopovers where he will commission newly built terminus before concluding his trip in Nairobi.

Mariakani, Miasenyi, Voi, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi, Emali and Athi River are some of the new terminals that the President will commission during the ride.

He confirmed that the head of state had secured funding that will see the new railway line extended to the lakeside city of Kisumu.

“The President reached agreements on new partnership with China and some of those agreements include support for funding for the Exim Bank of China for the next phase of the SGR that will take it from Naivasha to Kisumu,” said Esipisu.
