Radio 44 Host Latest Victim in Kenya’s Wave of Gender Violence

Police in Kahawa West, Kiambu County, are investigating another case of a woman being killed by her partner.

The body of Lilian Achieng Aluko body was discovered in her boyfriend’s residence on Friday, November 1, marking another tragic entry in the country’s mounting toll of violence against women. The vibrant Radio 44 presenter, known for her engaging personality, had informed her family of plans to spend the evening at her boyfriend’s home, a decision that would prove fatal. The grim discovery came after family members, unable to reach her, raised concerns about her prolonged absence.

Police arriving at the scene found Aluko’s body bearing severe trauma, including facial injuries and a critical wound behind her right ear. The Neighbours narrate that violent altercations could be heard emanating from the residence following the couple’s return from a local entertainment venue. The perpetrator had apparently turned up the stereo volume, effectively masking the sounds of struggle and preventing potential intervention from concerned neighbours.

Investigators later recovered a knife from the scene, suggesting premeditated violence rather than an impulsive act. Aluko’s boyfriend remains at large and has since prompted a widespread manhunt. The victim’s mother recounts receiving an anonymous call moments before learning of her daughter’s death.

“She departed around 11 am, mentioning she was visiting a friend,” she explains through tears.

This incident has intensified discussions about Kenya’s femicide epidemic, with recent National Police Service data revealing an alarming 97 women lost to gender-based violence in just three months. Women’s rights activists have intensified their calls for governmental action to address this crisis.
