On October 12, 2024, 23-year-old Seth Nyakio left her mother’s home in Kamakis, Kiambu, to visit a friend in Thika town.
The recent graduate of Zetech University departed from her mother’s residence in Kamakis estate, Kiambu, with plans to visit a friend in Thika town. Her mother Lucy Njeri, a nominated Member of the County Assembly in Kirinyaga County, recounts that her daughter was in good spirits and had assured her of a prompt return. The following day, as hours passed without word from Nyakio, concern began to mount. Njeri, accustomed to open communication with her only daughter, grew increasingly worried when messages and calls went unanswered.
By 10 pm on October 13, the silence had become unbearable, prompting Njeri to take action. Early the next morning, driven by maternal instinct and growing apprehension, Njeri set out for Thika town in search of her daughter. Following directions received over the phone, she found herself in a rented room in Biafra Estate, Thika West sub-County. It was there that the unthinkable became reality as Nyakio’s body was discovered, leaving her mother grappling with an indescribable loss.
The circumstances surrounding Nyakio’s death have raised serious questions about law enforcement’s handling of the case. Thika West sub-County police boss Laurence Muchangi confirms that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a probe into the incident. Investigators believe a male suspect, previously rejected by Nyakio, may have lured her to Thika before taking her life. The evidence points to a violent struggle and possible sexual assault, adding layers of horror to an already tragic situation.
According to the authorities, the victim’s body showed signs of a struggle and indications of sexual assault. Mr Muchangi assures that they are committed to solving the case and will soon bring the perpetrator to justice. It is also revealed that the deceased had previously survived a road accident in Nairobi earlier this year where she was hit by a private car. After eyewitnesses provided the victim’s mother with the registration details of the white Lexus car, the police were able to locate the vehicle and its owner, who were both detained at the Kasarani police station.
