Chesumei Member of Parliament Paul Biego Polo recently embarked on a diplomatic visit to Qatar focusing on engaging with Kenyan expatriates in the Gulf state.
Over the weekend, Polo conducted a series of meetings with Kenyan residents and workers including a visit to the Kenyan Embassy in Doha. His itinerary encompassed a tour of the living quarters of Kenyans in Qatar, providing him with direct insights into their living conditions. On September 1, Polo convened with members of the Chesumei community and other Kenyans working and residing in Qatar. These interactions were part of a broader initiative to connect with the Kenyan diaspora and address their concerns. The MP emphasizes the value of these meetings in gathering feedback on potential legislative measures to improve working conditions for Kenyans abroad.
Reflecting on his visit via a Facebook post, Polo expresses appreciation for the insights gained. He notes that the engagements offered not only an opportunity to listen to expatriates’ issues and proposals but also provided valuable perspectives on accelerating development in Kenya. The MP lauds the Kenyan diaspora for their resilience and commitment to their families back home and highlights their significant contributions to Kenya’s progress and their role as a source of national inspiration. Polo’s visit to Qatar is particularly timely as the Kenyan government increasingly recognizes the diaspora’s importance in national development.
Remittances from Kenyans abroad have become a crucial source of foreign exchange contributing significantly to the country’s economic stability. In 2023, diaspora remittances were estimated to exceed $3 billion. During his stay, the MP explored potential collaborations between the Kenyan government and Qatari authorities to enhance the welfare of Kenyan workers in Qatar. Discussions centred on critical issues such as fair wages, improved working conditions, and strengthened legal protections for expatriates. These efforts align with the Kenyan government’s broader objectives of safeguarding the rights and welfare of its citizens employed abroad.
Beyond addressing labour issues, Polo’s visit aimed to foster a sense of community among Kenyans in Qatar. He encouraged the formation of support networks and community groups to assist expatriates in navigating the challenges of living and working in a foreign country. These networks are viewed as essential in providing emotional and social support as well as practical assistance during times of need.
