The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has issued a stern warning to its former Secretary General Cleophas Malal following his recent controversial statements.
The party’s leadership has explicitly warned Malala against implicating key party figures specifically UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah in his political machinations. In an official statement released on Friday and signed by Interim Secretary General Hassan Omar, the UDA addresses Malala’s allegations from the previous day. The party emphatically asserts that Malala’s removal from office was conducted in full compliance with legal and procedural requirements. This assertion serves as the basis for the party’s caution against any further unwarranted protests organized by the former official.
“Malala’s ouster was a collective decision by the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). the same organ that had appointed him to hold the position in an “acting” capacity. Suffice it to say, the organ that appointed him is the very one that unanimously decided to replace him,” the statement reads in part.
The UDA emphasizes that Malala’s dismissal was not an arbitrary decision, but rather a collective resolution made by the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). Notably, this is the same body that had initially appointed Malala to the position on an “acting” basis. The party highlights the symmetry in this process, pointing out that the very organ responsible for Malala’s appointment was also unanimous in its decision to replace him. Furthermore, the UDA categorically rejects Malala’s insinuation of a connection between his ouster and alleged impeachment plans against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Both Gachagua and the UDA have expressed strong objections to Malala’s claims, particularly his implication of party leadership in a purported impeachment plot.
The party has taken particular issue with Malala’s public allegations against Governor Cecily Mbarire and Kimani Ichung’wah. In response, the UDA has explicitly warned Malala to refrain from involving these key party figures in his claims. The party clarifies that Mbarire, as a non-member of Parliament, lacks the capacity to initiate an impeachment motion, further undermining Malala’s allegations. This robust response from the UDA follows Malala’s contentious press conference during which the former Kakamega Senator alleged that Mbarire and Ichung’wah had orchestrated a “coup” within the ruling party. Malala claims that this supposed coup was aimed at weakening Gachagua’s position as Deputy President and that his own removal from the UDA leadership was part of this broader strategy rather than a result of incompetence or mismanagement.
Before Malala’s removal, the UDA had attempted to address the situation by summoning him to their headquarters on Ngong Road. However, this effort proved unsuccessful, ultimately leading to the NEC’s decision to appoint former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar as the interim Secretary General.
