The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has amplified calls for President William Ruto’s resignation amid growing national protests.

The party’s stance follows the June 25 demonstrations which resulted in civilian casualties and have been interpreted as a public vote of no confidence in Ruto’s leadership. ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna emphasizes the clarity and significance of the youth’s message, stating that their demands, including the president’s resignation, can not be ignored. Sifuna characterizes the current situation as a critical juncture for Kenya, potentially the nation’s final opportunity to address its myriad challenges.

The opposition party expresses admiration for the unity and resilience demonstrated by Kenyan youth, particularly noting their swift fundraising efforts to support injured protesters. Sifuna conveys the party’s deep respect and gratitude for the protesters’ courageous actions. ODM dismisses President Ruto’s call for dialogue, citing the intensified police crackdown on protests as contradictory to his plea for peace. The party affirms its support for the young protesters’ demands while holding Ruto accountable for the alleged police killings and abductions during the ongoing demonstrations.

Sifuna criticizes the government’s refusal to take responsibility, offer apologies, or make amends for the violence. He accuses the Head of State of attempting to distance his administration from the atrocities despite clear evidence of bloodshed. Moreover, the party threatens legal action against the Kenya Kwanza government for its alleged crimes. While President Ruto has promised thorough investigations into every loss of life, he has denied allegations of unlawful killings by authorities.

Throughout the demonstrations, he has consistently defended police actions, despite video evidence showing law enforcement physically attacking and firing live ammunition and tear gas at peaceful protesters. ODM strongly condemns the misuse of police power in suppressing unarmed demonstrators, asserting that no one should lose their life while exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest. The party also criticizes threats to reduce funding for the Judiciary and county authorities following the rejection of the 2024 Finance Bill.
