Flamboyant Kenyan Pastor Accused in Alleged Sh600 Million Overseas Job Scam Goes Missing
Pastor James Wanjohi

Pastor James Wanjohi known for his flamboyant lifestyle and role as the pastor of Jesus Culture Ministries in Roysambu, Nairobi, has found himself embroiled in a major controversy.

An organization associated with his church and business ventures has been accused of causing immense financial distress and disappointment to countless job seekers who had hoped to find better opportunities abroad. According to reports, over 4,000 individuals paid fees ranging from Sh100,000 to Sh140,000 to WorthStart Africa with the promise of securing jobs in countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia. However, these dreams of employment abroad quickly turned into nightmares as the job seekers were left disillusioned and out of a staggering Sh600 million they had invested in the fraudulent foreign job placement scheme. Nairobi Regional Criminal Investigations Officer Peter Njeru confirms that Pastor Wanjohi is a wanted man with his company WorthStart Africa under investigation for falsely promising overseas jobs in exchange for money.

Most of WorthStart’s directors and senior staff have already been apprehended and are in custody. Last week, Njeru’s team conducted a raid on the company’s office located at Pension Towers in Nairobi, where they gathered substantial evidence of the fraudulent activities. Several victims have come forward to share their harrowing experiences. Eleneta Njeri, a member of Jesus Culture Ministries paid Sh125,000 to WorthStart Africa after being offered an opportunity to work as a caregiver in Canada, complete with free housing and a work permit. To afford the payment, she took out a loan of Sh170,000 from a micro-lender. However, her dreams were shattered when she discovered that she had been scammed and the Canadian embassy imposed a five-year ban on her after finding that WorthStart Africa had used counterfeit financial documents to support her visa application.

Lydiah Wangechi, aged 37, lost Sh120,000 to WorthStart Africa after being promised a job opportunity in Canada as a hotelier along with free accommodation, a work permit, and the assistance of a legal officer. Shebach Muriithi lost Sh100,000 while pursuing a casual job in Canada that turned out to be nonexistent. Grace Kimani also lost Sh120,000 and has been tirelessly seeking a refund that seems unattainable. Investigators reveal that WorthStart Africa and its affiliated companies deceived their vulnerable clients through three methods: advertising job openings in Europe through mainstream and social media, intentionally providing inadequate documentation and falsifying financial statements during visa applications, and using different company names under WorthStart Africa to confuse and mislead applicants.

The National Employment Authority, a government body responsible for accrediting employment agencies in Kenya, states that WorthStart Africa and WorthStart Travel Agency do not have government accreditation to engage in recruitment or business transactions. When contacted by the Nation, Pastor Wanjohi requested that the story be postponed, claiming that he would calm the situation. He insists that his company solely focuses on assisting with visas, not job placements, and alleges that the controversy is a deliberate attempt by his competitors in the industry to tarnish his reputation. However, he failed to explain the numerous paid advertisements on television and radio in which influencers promoted his company for job placements abroad.

Kuna yapata imani 10,000 duniani. Waliotutawala walijitahidi kuondoa:

    1. Imani ya mababu na nyanya zetu.
