Opposition leader Raila Odinga has hinted at the possibility of endorsing Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as a candidate against President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during his brother Oburu Oginga’s thanksgiving event in Bondo on October 15, Raila dismissed Ruto’s statement that he would not contest for any political seat but instead shifted focus on comparing Ruto with Kalonzo. Raila made it clear that either he or Kalonzo would be on the ballot to face Ruto. Raila praised Kalonzo, describing him as a dependable leader who has consistently supported him throughout the years. He further pledged his support for him, emphasizing that he is a leader with integrity and can be trusted.
“I heard Ruto saying that I will not vie and he is comparing himself to Kalonzo. I want to tell Ruto that Kalonzo is better than him. We are seeing the games you (Ruto) are playing and we want to tell you that among us, someone will vie,” he said.
In preparation for a political showdown against President Ruto, several years before the 2027 elections, Azimio can be seen strategizing how to counter Kenya Kwanza’s charm offensive throughout the country, including Raila’s stronghold in Nyanza. The opposition leaders have announced their unity and readiness for a confrontation with the president. However, based on the speeches in Bondo, it seems that Kalonzo’s political prospects are finally aligning for the 2027 General Election. Speculation suggests that the former Prime Minister may be grooming Kalonzo to inherit his support base nationwide. Oburu praised the Wiper leader, acknowledging his unwavering loyalty and ability to make tough decisions, like supporting Raila as the flag bearer in the past.
Kalonzo’s allies also appealed to Nyanza to consider him in the future, highlighting the significant role he has played in supporting Raila’s candidacy in previous elections. Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr urged Nyanza not to underestimate the Wiper leader, while Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti emphasized their coalition’s united front. The Azimio leader voiced his concerns about the shortcomings in Kenya Kwanza’s leadership and its disconnection from the people. He strongly criticized the government’s failure to tackle the country’s security issues and other pressing challenges.
However, he tactfully avoided engaging in the cost of living discussion, assuring that they would comprehensively address it at a later time. On his part, former Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa urged Ruto to shift his attention away from 2027 and focus on the present, hinting that the opposition is yet to reveal its political strategy.
