Sports commentator Sean Cardovillis has passed away at his home in Westlands, Nairobi.
According to an anonymous source close to him, Cardovillis was found dead by a relative. Police have stated that he was found dead outside his house. The veteran journalist had been struggling with a prolonged illness and in 2022 was admitted to the High Dependency Unit at a city hospital where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Facing hefty hospital bills, Cardovillis’s family made a public plea for financial help. Despite fighting valiantly, the determined journalist ultimately lost his battle to the illness.
With over 20 years of experience in sports commentary, Cardovillis provided his services to different media houses including Capital FM, Standard Group PLC, and Nation Media Group. He also contributed to sports coverage in the Seychelles working for Paradise FM and Tal FM from 2006 to 2012. Throughout his illustrious career, he bagged several awards highlighting his exceptional grasp of sports journalism. The awards included the 2007 BBC Africa Radio Award for sports and the Sports Award at the 2007 CNN/Multichoice African Journalist of the Year Awards.
Having worked as a sports journalist for over two decades, Cardovillis covered major events such as the Commonwealth Games and the Africa Cup of Nations. He even had the opportunity to interview golf legend Tiger Woods twice at the Dubai Desert Classic. The celebrated journalist began his career as a presenter at Capital FM in 1997 and eventually became the sports editor.
He later joined Nation as a radio sports commentator before transitioning to TV as a sports journalist. Though he left NTV and took a break from journalism in 2020, he made a comeback to Capital FM in 2021 where he presented sports updates from Monday to Saturday. Sadly, his demise read an end to the outstanding chapter of his career.
