Chef Maliha Mohammed from Mombasa is on the brink of setting a new Guinness World Record by completing the longest home kitchen cooking marathon.
On August 11th, the marathon for the longest cooking session started, and by yesterday, she already spent 68 hours and 30 minutes preparing food. Her ultimate goal is to surpass the previous record that was broken in 2018 by American chef Rickey Lumpkin of 68 hours, 30 minutes, and 1 second. This isn’t her first crack at breaking a world record; in 2019, she cooked for seventy-five straight hours for the title of longest Cooking Marathon.
In her marathon, Maliha aims to showcase Swahili cuisines such as Biryani, Bhajia, and Chicken Masala. She is also intrigued to discover and try out dishes from across the world including the famous Jolof rice. In the month of June, Maliha invested 55 hours uninterruptedly preparing for the mammoth occasion ahead. Despite her dedication, she faced difficulties with corporate support in Kenya.
After cooking food for needy groups in Mombasa County, Maliha now plans to challenge Nigerian Chef Hilda Baci’s Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon. Baci currently holds the title after cooking for 93 hours non-stop. Maliha aims to be one of the few individuals to hold two Guinness World Records. Baci recently made history by cooking for nearly four days straight, feeding hundreds of Nigerians and setting the record for the longest individual cooking marathon, with 100 hours logged in a makeshift kitchen in Lagos.
Guinness Records awards victory after a thorough review of the procedures followed throughout the cooking attempt.
