Details of Uhuru’s Meeting With Museveni
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta Greeting Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni at Uganda's State House on August 5, 2023

On August 5, 2023, former President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni as a peace facilitator for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

During their engagement, Uhuru informed Museveni of the ongoing peace process in the eastern region of the DRC. Uhuru was flanked by Ambassador Macharia Kamau, Brigadier (Rtd) Elijah Mwanyika, and Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, John Mulimba. President Ruto had appointed Uhuru as a peace envoy to conflict-ridden regions in Africa. During the appointment, the Head of State praised Uhuru’s previous efforts in Ethiopia and the Great Lakes Region.

“Former Head of State and Facilitator of the EAC – led Nairobi Peace Process, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta earlier today, paid a courtesy call on President Kaguta Museveni of Uganda at State House, Entebbe. Besides the security situation in the East African Community (EAC) region, the two leaders deliberated on the ongoing Peace Processes geared towards the realization of a lasting peace and stability in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” the statement read in parts.

In other news, Azimio co-principal Martha Karua has expressed mixed feelings over the recent visit of the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, to Kenya.  Karua has questioned the timing of the visit, stating that it is suspicious as it coincides with both the Azimio la Umoja and Kenya Kwanza allied groups seeking the intervention of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the recent anti-government protests that resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.

Khan was in the country for the 23rd graduation ceremony of Mount Kenya University (MKU). According to Karua, there exists a strong connection between MKU founder Simon Gicharu Simon Gicharu, and President Ruto. Karua puts forth that Khan’s visit raises doubts about the International Criminal Court’s credibility. In April, Azimio requested that the ICC investigate police brutality against its supporters. Furthermore, the coalition led by Raila Odinga urged Khan to launch an investigation into Inspector-General of Police Japhet Koome for unconstitutional actions in his declaration of the opposition protests as illegal.
