Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday made his first appearance at an Azimio event since handing over power to President William Ruto.
The move comes amid rising tensions between the two following a government raid at the home of Uhuru’s son Jomo. As the chairperson of the opposition coalition’s top decision-making organ, Uhuru’s attendance at the memorial service for victims of anti-government protests could further strain his relationship with Ruto. He joined other Azimio leaders including Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka at the prayer meeting held at the SKM Command Centre in Karen. The opposition alleges that police killed many Azimio supporters during the protests. This is Uhuru’s first public appearance since the Jubilee National Delegates Convention at the Ngong Racecourse.
President Ruto is facing criticism for his actions after an alleged illegal gun raid at the home of Uhuru’s son Jomo. The incident comes at a time when there are reports of efforts to bring together opposition leader Raila Odinga and Ruto to find a peaceful resolution to their disparities. A large tent has been set up at the SKM centre for a prayer service that will feature various choirs singing Christian hymns. Several high-ranking Azimio leaders are expected to attend the service which will be led by the clergy. Family members of the victims have also been invited to attend.
“Today we gather as a nation to pray for the souls of the victims of police brutality to Rest in Peace. To the injured, admitted in various hospitals across the country, we wish you a Quick Recovery,” ODM said in a statement.
