Kenyan MP Threatens to Sponsor a Motion to Impeach Deputy President Gachagua

Bumula MP Wamboka Wanani has threatened to sponsor an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his conduct.

The opposition MP said the deputy president has failed to represent the face of the nation and has instead remained focused on the interests of his Mt. Kenya backyard.

“Every time that man opens his mouth you wonder whether he is the deputy president of Kenya or he is the DP of the Kikuyu republic.  In fact, at some time I will bring a motion in parliament to discuss your conduct and impeach you,” Wamboka told reporters.

He added: “Rigathi Gachagua must know that respect is earned, how he’s conducting himself is below par. He has become a tribal chauvinist.”

Wamboka further accused Gachagua of threatening other elected leaders, including Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja over his administration’s plan to ban public service vehicles from operating within the central business district. 

“He’s threatening everyone. You saw the other day when he threatened Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. Sakaja was not elected by Kikuyus, he was elected by Kenyans in Nairobi,” the MP added.

Impeachment of a deputy president is not a walk in the park, given that such a motion must be backed by at least a third of all the MPs to sail through.

Anyone out to impeach the deputy president must prove that he has grossly violated the Constitution, gross misconduct, or committed a crime under national or international laws.

Gachagua’s Kenya Kwanza coalition has an upper hand in the National Assembly with 177 members against opposition Azimio’s 157 MPs. This excludes two pending by-elections in Garissa Township and Kandara constituencies.
