Ngirici Files a Petition Challenging Ann Waiguru's Win in the Kirinyaga Governor Race

Former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici has moved to court to challenge the election of Ann Waiguru as Kirinyaga governor.

In a petition filed on Wednesday at the High Court in Kerugoya by her lawyers, Ngirici says she has evidence that the outcome of the election was manipulated in favor of Governor Waiguru.

Ngirici has named the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Kirinyaga County returning officer Jane Gitonga, Waiguru and Deuty Governor David Wachira Githanda as respondents.

Waiguru, who defended her seat on a UDA party ticket, was declared the winner of the gubernatorial race after garnering 113,088 votes, defeating Ngirici by a margin of 7,324 votes.

Ngirici, who vied on an independent ticket, secured 105,667 votes while Charles Kiburi came a distant third with 22,065 votes.

Speaking days after the August 9th election, Ngirici claimed that 51,000 votes were illegally added to Waiguru’s tally and expressed confidence that justice will be in her favor.

“I am only going to follow through and make sure the will of the people will not be subverted. We are going to go on, we will make a petition,” said Ngirici.

“I want to tell my supporters to keep calm because I know this county supported me and people believe that there is democracy in Kenya, I also believe so.”
