10 out of the 12 MPs who were elected on independent tickets in the August 9th election have joined the Kenya Kwanza Alliance which is led by president-elect William Ruto.
Ruto made the announcement after chairing a meeting of Kenya Kwanza elected leaders at his Karen residence on Wednesday afternoon.
“Out of the 12 independent MPs, 10 have joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition,” Ruto told the meeting.
The 12 MPs elected as independents are Rahim Dawood (Imenti North), Ronald Karauri (Kasarani), Elijah Njoroge (Gatundu North), Shakeel Shabbir (Kisumu East), Timothy Toroitich (Marakwet West), Joshua Mwalyo (Masinga), Nebert Muriuki (Mbeere South), Geoffrey Mulanya (Nambale) and Kitilai Ntutu (Narok South).
Others are Fatuma Mohamed (Migori Woman Representative), Caroline Ngelechei (Elgeyo-Marakwet Woman Rep), and Monica Muthoni (Lamu Woman Rep).
Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition which is led by Raila Odinga bagged 162 seats in the 349-member National Assembly while Kenya Kwanza secured 159. The decision by the 10 independent MPs to join Kenya Kwanza means Ruto will take control of the assembly with 169 seats.
In the Senate, Kenya Kwanza won 24 seat against 23 by Azimio.
During the meeting, Ruto also revealed plans by his administration to amend parliamentary Standing Orders to have Cabinet Secretaries respond to questions on the floor of the House.
“We will soon be making our public policy pronouncement on how we will govern the country after the end of the transition process. We will forward the names of our people to the transition committee,” he said.
