Kenya Government Orders All Schools to Allow Students to Wear Religious Attire

The Ministry of Education has directed the management of all schools in the country to allow students to wear religious attire, including hijabs, turbans, and veils.

While reiterating the government’s commitment to curb religious discrimination in the country, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha said all learning institutions must adhere to the directive.

“In terms of children’s dressing while at school, we have pronounced as the government that no child should be removed because of wearing a headgear whether it is a Muslim hijab, Christian sister attire, or Akorino turban. The instructions must be obeyed; let all children be given freedom in school to wear the hijab and Akorino, turban and all the others,” said Magoha.

“I have been informed that there are still some schools harassing the children because of the manner they dress and sometimes discriminating against them.”

At the same time, CS Magoha called on school heads across the country to welcome religious guidance in learning institutions as part of the measures to instill discipline in students as well as set up places of worship in schools for learners to easily practice their faith.

“Where there are already Chaplains or Imams in schools they should encourage guidance, counseling and prayers. Where we don’t have such people, principals are encouraged to create some places,” Magoha added.

  1. Just curious,does any one…
Just curious, does any one know if the Kenya army accommodates wearing of hijabs, turbans…etc? I ask because the USA, the model army many nations look upto does.Obviously they are not going to allow a hijab that totally “destroys” ,or alters the camouflage to the extend that it is does not look like a military uniform.
My point here being, if it does not negatively affect works or learning, what is the problem?
