President Kenyatta has ruled out a lockdown even as the country continues to record increased cases of Covid-19.
Uhuru said it would be pointless to lock down the country, adding that such a move would not help contain the pandemic at this point in time.
“Locking down the country will not help. The government cannot be on the door of every Kenyan, the responsibility is ours,” Uhuru said in his address to the nation on Monday.
He added: “This is not tribal, this is not politics, we are talking about lives. There are countries hiding truths and facts, as for us…we are a very free and open society…a democracy. We are not sweeping anything under the carpet but are telling each other the honest truth.”
Uhuru held that Kenyans must learn to be responsible by protecting themselves and their families.
“We are asking for God to give us strength but you need to help yourself first before He helps you.”
“It is evident that those who have displayed such a careless attitude have suffered greatly and in this case, we are not special. Let us not follow those examples that will hurt us in the end,” he added.
As of Monday, there were 17,975 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country, 7,833 recoveries, and 285 deaths.
Experts say Kenya is on the cusp of entering the peak of the Covid-19 infection and have warned health facilities could get overwhelmed.
