A group of youth on Thursday night demolished a podium where Deputy President William Ruto-led ‘Kenya Kwanza’ alliance was set to hold a meeting in Kilifi on Friday.
Ruto was scheduled to grace the political rally in the company of ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula of Ford-Kenya.
Citizen Digital reported that the demolition was supervised by Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) party youth leader Samir Nyundo, who claimed that the meeting was being held on his family land without consent.
“Everything was ready when I left the venue last evening. We had alerted security agents of the planned meeting and they were aware that it would be held today,” Kilifi MP Owen Baya said on Friday. “Around 11 pm I got word that youth affiliated to PAA were destroying the setup at the venue.”
Baya insisted that organizers of the meeting sought permission from Samir’s kin Jonathan Nyundo to hold the meeting on the venue. He blamed Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, who is the leader of PAA, for trying to block other leaders from holding meetings in the county.
“Our politics is peaceful and we will not allow our youth to be used to promote acts of violence and intimidation,” he added.
