President Kenyatta has commissioned a public-private partnership housing project for Kenya Defense Forces (KDF).
The mega project will be rolled out in Nairobi, Nakuru, Laikipia, and Mombasa counties as part of the government’s efforts to improve the welfare of the military by providing decent housing.
On Wednesday, the president presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the project that will see 3,500 housing units constructed at Roysambu area in Nairobi.
“Today marks the first step in the journey of addressing the problem of shortage of houses for our officers in the military. For a long time, we have been exploring ways of addressing the housing problem and we are happy that we have now found a solution through construction of the houses under public-private partnership,” Kenyatta said.
The houses will be developed on KDF land in Roysambu (Nairobi), Kwambuzi in Nanyuki (Laikipia), Nyali (Mombasa), and Gilgil (Nakuru) under a build, lease, and transfer (BLT) arrangement.
President Uhuru says the project is part of the fulfillment of the affordable housing pillar of the Big Four Agenda.
“I am confident that this project will be implemented according to the set down plan to ensure that within a short time all our officers and their families have decent accommodation,” he added.
Besides housing, Uhuru says the government is also putting up and upgrading military hospitals to serve KDF officers and their dependents across the country.
This is one project long…
This is one project long overdue.
I once visited nanyuki and the soldiers were sleeping like in dormitories.
The only issue here will be this will cost more than what it should based on the level of milking that will happen on this project.
