A woman who failed to return Sh73,000 sent to her number by mistake has been arraigned in a Nairobi court.
Nancy Chonge Chepkwemoi was charged with stealing after Vincent Maina Wambutu erroneously wired the money to her MPesa account.
Wambutu entered a wrong number while transferring cash from his bank account to MPesa. He called the number which belongs to Nancy but it was switched off.
This prompted him to report the incident to the bank which then informed Safaricom, only to find that Nancy had withdrawn part of the money and a reversal could not be effected.
The suspect switched on her phone three days later but she did not bother to contact Wambutu or send back his money. Wambutu was forced to report the matter to the Parklands police station, leading to the arrest of Nancy.
Appearing before senior resident magistrate Renee Kitangwa of Kibera law courts, Nancy was charged with stealing contrary to section 268 (1) as read with section 275 of the penal code.
She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on a 50,000 cash bail. The matter will be mentioned on December 21st.
