Death Toll From Mwingi Bus Tragedy Climbs to 33

The death toll from Saturday’s Mwingi bus tragedy has climbed to 33 after 10 more bodies were retrieved from the swollen river on Sunday.

The bus belonging to St. Joseph Seminary School in Mwingi plunged into River Enziu as the driver attempted to cross a flooded bridge.

On Saturday, 23 people including four children were confirmed dead in the accident while 10 were rescued alive.

The wreckage of the bus was pulled from the river on Sunday afternoon after concerted efforts by a multi-agency team comprising officers from the Kitui county government, the navy, and the National Youth Service (NYS).

The vehicle with a capacity of 50 passengers was ferrying members of a Catholic church choir to a wedding event in the Nuu area in Mwingi north when the accident happened.

On Sunday, President Kenyatta sent a message of condolence and comfort to the families that lost their loved ones in the tragedy and wished quick recovery to those that were injured.

The president further urged Kenyans across the country to heed government advisory against attempting to cross swollen rivers, especially during the current rainy season.

A few months ago I told my Daughter that no Wedding when she gets Married. It’s a Waste of Time and Money; and Waste of Life in this Case. I told her that my Agreement with her Future husband’s parents plus her Agreement with her to-be Husband are Enough prerequisites for Us parents to Unite them (before GOD) as Husband and Wife. No Church; no Public drama.

It is really unfortunate that so many lives were lost. A bridge might have saved these poor souls. In many parts of Ukambani, bridges are non-existence and instead river crossings are marked by a concrete slab. We have to demand better leadership!
