The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has shortlisted 10 candidates for the position of Chief Justice ahead of interviews slated for April.
The 10 candidates are Justice Said Chitembwe, Prof. Patricia Mbote, Justice Martha Koome, Justice Marete Njagi, Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, Justice Nduma Nderi, Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia, Justice William Ouko, Dr. Wekesa Moni, and Alice Yano.
The position fell vacant on January 11th following the retirement of David Maraga, who served as the country’s 14th Chief Justice and the second under the 2010 Constitution.
The position is currently being held by Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu in an acting capacity.
JSC has asked members of the public to submit their views on the candidates on or before March 3rd, 2021.
The successful candidate will earn between Sh990,000 and Sh1,327,888 per month excluding benefits, according to a gazette notice published by JSC last month.
The Chief Justice acts as the head of the Judiciary, president of the Supreme Court, and the link between the Judiciary and other arms of the government. He/she exercises general direction and control over the Judiciary.
