Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has announced Kenya will not ban flights to and from the UK and Europe following the discovery of a new COVID-19 strain.
Kagwe said Kenya does not need to take such a drastic move given that countries hit by the new virus are carrying out thorough screening on residents.
“We as a country do not see any need to close our airspace due to the new variant, in fact, a country such as Britain is doing serious screening so we are not in danger as a country,” Kagwe said.
Several countries suspended travel to and from the UK after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson last weekend announced the country had discovered a mutated variant of COVID-19 that could be up to 70 percent more contagious than the original one.
As a result, the UK government imposed a two-week Christmas lockdown in London and parts of the South East and East of England to prevent the spread of the disease.
Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Canada, Netherlands, Belgium, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, and Austria are among others that have banned flights from Britain.
Kagwe, who spoke in Mukurweini, Nyeri County during the 30th anniversary of Wakulima Dairy, urged Kenyans to continue observing COVID-19 regulations during the festive season and avoid hugging and partying.
“As a country, we have left Kenyans to control themselves during this festival season, there were suggestions that we ban inter-county travel, however, we saw it fit to leave Kenyans to exercise their own control but we will enforce protocols,” he added.
