The High Court has barred suspected Kenyan drug trafficker Joyce Akinyi from selling, transferring, or disposing two luxury cars pending the hearing and determination of a case filed by Assets Recovery Agency (ARA).
Justice Mumbi Ngugi on Thursday directed Ms. Akinyi to surrender the original logbooks of the two vehicles, a Toyota Crown and a Toyota DBA-KGC10, to ARA within 7 days.
ARA says it has reasons to believe the motor vehicles were acquired through the illegitimate trade in narcotics hence are proceeds of crime.
“…unless the orders are issued the economic advantage derived from the commission of crimes will continue to benefit a few to the disadvantage of the general public interest,” ARA says in court papers.
Investigating officer Fredrick Muriuki in an affidavit filed in court says 1050 grams of heroin were recovered during a search carried out at Deep West resort in Lang’ata, an entity owned by Akinyi.
“…in the course of investigations I established the following bank accounts were used for transacting suspicious funds which there is reasonable cause to believe were acquired through proceeds crime from the illegitimate trade in narcotic drugs by the respondents,” says Muriuki.
Investigations revealed that Akinyi, the former wife of deported Nigerian drug trafficking suspect Anthony Chinedu, deposited over Sh60 million in two accounts in the same bank over a period of four years. The deposits were made in tranches below Sh1,000,000 to avoid scrutiny, the investigating officer adds.
