Kenya is staring at a possible health crisis amid the Covid-19 pandemic after healthcare workers maintained they will down their tools on Monday, May 18th.
The health workers early this month issued a two-week strike notice demanding proper protection from the Covid-19 disease and harmonization of risk allowances.
Through the Kenya Health Workers Union Society, the medics accuse the national government and council of governors of neglecting their welfare.
The union says health workers are overexposed to the virus due to a lack of proper Covid-19 training and personal protection equipment.
Speaking on Thursday, May 14th, Kenya National Clinical Workers Union Chairman Peterson Wachira also lamented that health workers are subjected to poor working conditions.
“This pandemic is an emergency but if you are not treating health workers as the forefront soldiers and you are treating them as normal people then it is a sad day, ” said Wachira.
He added: “You have seen that some medics have been infected in the line of duty…for you to protect Kenyans you must protect the medics. As the health care workers’ union, the strike we called is going to begin on Monday so that we can have some time and focus on things to be done.”
Last week, the Health Ministry announced 34 Kenyan medics had contracted Covid-19 in the line of duty but none of them had succumbed to the illness.
On Thursday, the number of Covid-19 infections in the country increased by 21 to 758 out of which 42 have died and 284 have recovered.
