National Intelligence Officer, Landlord Stabbed to Death Trying to Rescue Woman from Estranged Husband

A National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer has died after he was stabbed while trying to rescue a woman from her estranged husband’s beating.

The man used a knife to attack Benjamin Sugut, a 58-year-old NIS officer based in Kisumu, and her estranged wife’s landlord Edwin Cheruiyot Kogo after they tried to stop him from assaulting her.

The two succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Mosoriot Hospital, where they were rushed after the stabbing incident.

The suspect had visited his estranged wife Joyline Jelagat on Sunday, May 3rd, at Kapkeringon shopping center in Nandi County, where she operates a shop. An argument ensued between the two and Joyline screamed for help after her husband tried to attack her.

Members of the public led by Sugut and Kogo responded to the woman’s distress call but the man identified as Elkana pulled out a kitchen knife from his pocket and stabbed whoever was in sight.

He stabbed five people and locked himself up in his wife’s shop before officers from Kabiyet Police Station arrived at the scene on time to save him from an angry mob that baying for his blood. Police used force to subdue and arrest the man.

Two of his other three victims were treated and discharged while one was referred to Kapsabet Hospital for further treatment.
