10-Year-Old Kenyan Cancer Survivor Stuck in India Begs to be Evacuated

A 10-year-old Kenyan boy suffering from a brain tumor and who is stuck in India together with his dad has pleaded with the government to evacuate them from there.

Lewis Chege, accompanied by his father Simon Leiyan, left Kenya on February 26th, 2020 for cancer treatment at Max Super Specialty Hospital in New Delhi. The two are unable to return home after the country was placed on lockdown to stop the spread of Covid-19.

“My name is Lewis Chege from Kenya and I came to India to have surgery because I have a brain tumor but now I am healed. I have also been doing radiotherapy and all my sessions are over.”

“I appeal to you for help and if I get to Kenya safely, I will be sincerely grateful. I just want to meet my family back in Kenya who have really missed me. I pray for your help,” Chege says in a video taken by India-based Kenyan journalist Leon Lidigu.

The two have been staying in a Sh4,000 per day hotel room and Leiyan fears they will be ejected soon due to accumulated bills.

“We are only worried if no help comes the soonest, we may be thrown out of the hotel, hungry and with a cancer patient who is a minor requiring all the care available,” said Leiyan.

“He tells me he fears being a street boy in a foreign land and we had better not have come. Although he doesn’t really understand the situation at hand, he sees the struggle we go through.”

“I am a father of two and my wife stayed behind to take care of our toddler. She raises money from family and friends, then sends to us if she gets anything because sometimes she doesn’t get at all,” he added.

Last week, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Amb. Macharia Kamau said 224 Kenyans, including patients and their relatives, are stranded in India due to the Covid-19 crisis.

“We hope that we are going to find an amicable solution that will work for everybody,” said Macharia.
