Uhuru: I Wouldn’t Mind Being Kenya’s Prime Minister

President Kenyatta on Friday said he is not privy to the contents of the much-talked Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.

Speaking when he met leaders from Mt. Kenya region at Sagana State Lodge, Kenyatta maintained that his handshake with ODM leader Raila Odinga is not centered on 2022 succession politics.

“Being in power means nothing when peace is elusive. And that is why I said I should look for the other man [Raila Odinga] so that we can bring political stability in Kenya,” said Kenyatta.

He added: “Even in my handshake deal with Raila Odinga, I did not tell him that I will support him should he express interest in the presidency in 2022. The resolution of our meeting was that we prioritize peace in Kenya.”

There have been speculations that the BBI task force has recommended the reintroduction of prime minister position and that Kenyatta was angling the post.

However, President Uhuru played down the claims but noted that he would not mind serving Kenya in the position.

“I do not know the contents of the BBI report yet. I hear people claiming Uhuru Kenyatta wants to become the prime minister of Kenya. I wouldn’t mind being in leadership in such a post, though let us deal with the current situation first,” Kenyatta said.

Kenyatta has in the past insisted that he will retire from politics once his current and final term expires in 2022 but there have been calls from a section of leaders to have him serve the country in a different role since he is ‘still young.’
