Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi says he is the right candidate to succeed President Kenyatta in 2022.
Mudavadi, who is currently on a tour to the United States to popularize his 2022 presidential bid, said he is ready to take Kenya to the next level. He spoke on Friday during a meeting with Kenyans in Springfield City, Massachusetts.
“Elections are not about emotions but rationality. We must start putting the right leaders in office. Let’s not pick leaders because they shout the loudest because they are rabble-rousers,” Mudavadi said.
He also hit out at Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga over his stand on a referendum. Mudavadi said Kenyans must reject any changes to the constitution to create positions for some leaders.
“Are you amending the constitution to create jobs for some political elite or you are amending the constitution because it is going to serve the interest of the country?” he posed.
“As we seek to amend the constitution, we must, first of all, ask ourselves; is it to serve the interests of the country? Or to create positions for the political elite? All we need is to think straight, think right and do what is right. Let us pull together,” he added.
Mudavadi also took a swipe at Deputy President William Ruto over donations to churches saying they are meant to hoodwink Kenyans.
“We have been judging our leaders by the amount of money they can dish out at church functions yet they do not appear on the official register of KRA as the highest taxpayers. They are donating more than Safaricom does,” he noted.
He lauded President Kenyatta over his efforts in the fight against corruption. “Corruption is rife, unemployment is high and our national debt has skyrocketed, but there is hope. We can turn it around, we can do something to create jobs, we can reduce our public debt to manageable levels, we can do it by making sure that the right leadership is in place,” Mudavadi said.
At the same time, Mudavadi applauded Kenyans in the diaspora, especially those in the US for their contribution to the growth of the country’s economy.
“The recognition Kenyans living abroad get from the Government should be commensurate with the great contribution they are making to the country’s social-economic development. We should, therefore, formulate policies that address the needs of the diaspora,” he stated.
