Dr. Edwin Abonyo, the husband of the late Bomet Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso has explained why the family did not go public about her health condition.
The family finally confirmed that Governor Laboso was battling cancer following her death at Nairobi Hospital on Monday afternoon.
Speaking at Lee Funeral Home, Dr. Abonyo explained that Laboso had battled the disease for a long time and it was her wish that her medical condition remains a private matter.
“She actually suffered for a long time but we kept it under wraps. She did not want it to deter her duty and all the things that she was doing,” said Abonyo.
He added: “She was very strong and we can only reciprocate that by also being strong for her.”
Citing medical files, The Standard reported that the 58-year-old politician was first diagnosed with cancer in 1991 but the disease in remission until recently when her health deteriorated.
Dr. Laboso died while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital, where she had been admitted since she jetted back to the country on July 14th after a medical trip abroad.
Laboso had left the country for the United Kingdom on May 29th after handing over duties to Bomet Deputy Governor HillaryBarchok.
She spent six weeks at London’s Royal Marden NHS Foundation Trust Hospital before she was discharged to seek further treatment in India.
Laboso, a former Egerton University lecturer, leaves behind a widower and three sons.
Remembering the late and…
Remembering the late and former President of Zambia Frederick Chiloba, I am convinced Politics is a Stressful career; and therefore a Corrupting career. It effectively corrupts Spirit, Soul, and Mind (to kill the body). It makes matters worse for your Health if you already you’re unhealthy. A by the way: The Founding fathers of Zambia (Kenneth Kaunda) is still Alive and About.
I think once they mentioned…
I think once they mentioned that she had been to London’s Royal Marden NHS Foundation for treatment it became obvious that she had cancer because that hospital is well renowned as a cancer treatment center. But this was only in the recent past. Prior to that it seemed like she was doing well and no one could tell she had first been diagnosed back in 1991. Having been diagnosed 28yrs ago and gone into remission, I wonder what triggered the relapse. May she rest in peace with no more suffering.
I think if you are public…
I think if you are public figure, it is required of you to reveal your medical condition and plan successions and the people who voted for you d deserve to know. If you are private citizen, then by all means make your health private if you must
